TERRA FIRMA
Greencorps Terra Firma was a green industry, employment and training opportunity for people looking to work outside and create positive change in their lives and communities. The training included hands-on, outdoor projects, as well as indoor training and certifications to advance the career paths of our trainees.
Terra Firma invested in people with barriers to employment including: people who are justice involved, have gaps in employment, and/or lack education or experience.
Terra Firma’s goal was to reinvest in the communities of Bronzeville, Grand Boulevard, Washington Park, Woodlawn, Greater Grand Crossing, South Shore, and South Chicago by maintaining and improving community gardens, public spaces, and vacant land.
In 2021, we improved over 25 acres of vacant/community managed land by:
- Removed 7725 lbs of weeds and woody materials
- Pruned 82 urban street trees
- Planted 6 trees and hundreds of spring bulbs
- Built raised bed gardens in previously vacant lots
- Moved over 50 cubic yards of soils
- Removed of 8210 lbs of garbage
Greencorps Terra Firma aided community gardens located within our region by providing garden cleanup services, tree care services, assistance with planting and other laborious tasks, soil and mulch deliveries, and basic construction services.
